Understanding Licensure

Understanding licensure requirements in Virginia can be a complex task.  At the Center for Teaching Excellence, we’re here to help answer questions you might have about licensure or recertification.  For specific advice on your licensure needs, seek clarification from your school division’s licensure specialist.

The Center for Teaching Excellence at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise provides credit-bearing continuing education courses for teachers. These are taken as individual courses and not as a comprehensive teacher preparation program. The CTE does not provide practicum or internship opportunities required to complete licensure requirements. Continuing teacher education courses are not intended to apply to degree programs. Transfer of credit for coursework is at the discretion of the receiving institution.

Courses from the Center for Teaching Excellence are aligned with the Virginia Department of Education’s requirements for licensure and recertification and can be used to satisfy the professional studies coursework for provisionally licensed teachers.
